The journey to parenthood does not always play out in the way that was expected.
I am able to offer therapy to support you to move forwards after difficult experiences around becoming a parent or being unable to be the parent you always dreamed of.
You may be battling with infertility, grieving after pregnancy or baby loss or perhaps still feeling the impact of a difficult birth or challenges with breastfeeding. You may also be reflecting on your own childhood experiences as you become a parent yourself or perhaps having worries about your ability to bond with your baby.
I have a background of working in both perinatal mental health and perinatal trauma and loss services. This has involved working as a mental health nurse, clinical lead and EMDR therapist. I am proud to be able to combine all of this experience to offer therapy to women and their families.
Please get in touch if you would like to talk about whether I may be able to help you move forwards after your difficult experiences.
I am fortunate to have undertaken specialist perinatal EMDR training as well as training in birth debrief, infant loss training and compassion focused therapy for grief. I will draw on this expertise through the different phases of EMDR therapy.
I will provide a space in which you feel safe and supported to make sense of your situation and to find a new way forward.
I am also an accredited VIG practitioner and am delighted to be able to offer this service if you feel unconfident as a parent or worry that there is an issue in your relationship with your baby.
Having a traumatic birth, postnatal trauma or perinatal mental health problems can sometimes have an impact on your relationship with your baby. More often, it can affect your confidence as a parent so that even if you are doing a great job, you are not always able to see it or believe it. VIG can really help you to initiate change in relationships and self-belief that feels 'stuck'.
What is VIG?
Video Interaction Guidance is a strengths based and effective brief intervention. It highlights and builds on attuned moments in the parent-child interaction. Parents are supported by a VIG Practitioner to view and reflect together on strengths based micro-moments of video. Parents are supported through a process of active engagement and reflection that helps them to become aware of, and build on their skills in attunement. It is client centred and moves at the clients pace. helping them to reach their goals.
VIG has a strong theoretical base and the evidence base for VIG is an international one. VIG is recommended in several NICE Guidelines.
What would it look like if we worked together using VIG?
We would initially meet for a consultation to talk about your concerns and to define a goal or 'helping question' - this helps to provide a focus for the work around what change is most desired.
In a separate session I would then film you and your child interacting together for a brief period. I then edit this to select moments of positive attunement between you and your child.
A 'Shared Review' session is then arranged where we meet to look together at the video clips of you and your child. We will get a better understanding of what is going on for you and your child in those moments and what you can take from this.
A 'VIG Cycle' is a filming session and a shared review. Even one cycle can make a big difference, but is typical to have 3 VIG cycles to really consolidate the work and make a plan for moving forwards.
VIG is such a powerful way of showing you what your strengths are. Being able to see these can have a profound impact on your confidence and how you see your relationship with your child. It can bring some real moments of healing and relief from anxiety.
VIG supports caregivers to adopt a culture of curiosity and can enhance bonds within relationships. It is a powerful tool which gives families feedback on what they are doing well but also enables conversations about aspects of relationships that could be strengthened.
What are the fees for VIG?
The initial consultation appointment is £75 and will be up to an hour. This enables us to talk about your concerns and to develop a helping question together. This can either be online or at the Bird House Therapy Centre in Falmouth.
You are then offered the opportunity to have between one and three cycles of VIG.
Each cycle is £200. This involves a short filming session (either at your home or online) and the shared review (usually at the Bird House Therapy Centre).
I am happy to drive to locations within 20 mile radius of Falmouth without charge, I am happy to consider locations outside of this but would charge a small additional fee to cover costs incurred.
